Description
Available bamboo rhizome varieties are:
- Phyllostachys meyeri – Meyeri leaves often have a golden tone, like the leaves of Golden bamboo. Meyeri is beautiful against a blue sky. Poles are smooth and straight. Shoots resemble the shoots of golden bamboo.
- Phyllostachys bambusoides “Tanakae” – Tanakae is a variety of Japanese Timber that has spots on its canes. Japanese timber is the variety that Japanese crafts people use. It is famous for making Japanese and Chinese bows. I have none bigger in diameter than 1 1/2” in 12 years of growing from an established pot. When dried, Tanakae is a beautiful light tan with dark brown spots.
- Phyllostachys edulis, “Moso” – Moso is the largest Phyllostachys. Young culms are covered with a velvety coat of soft hairs. Most used bamboo in China: food, timber, paper, plywood, flooring, laminated products like cutting boards. My grove was planted from 3 gallon pots, each pot was a different seedling.
- Phyllostachys bambusoides,”Japanese Timber, Madake” – Japanese timber is the bamboo used by Japanese crafts people. It is spectacular when made into a Japanese or Chinese bow.
- Phyllostachys nigra,”Henon” – Often called Giant Grey Bamboo. In my middle Georgia groves, a lot of varieties have grey canes. Henon is grey naturally.
- Phyllostachys parvifolia,
- Phyllostachys Shanghai #3, Shanghai #3 was sent to the USDA Quarantine Facility from Shanghai by a collector. I do not know its botanical name. I planted it a year and a half later than the other bamboos from a box of rhizomes, but it caught up with the others. In 2025 it produced more shoots than every other bamboo, even moso.

- Phyllostachys viridis “Robert Young”,
- Phyllostachys Viridis “Houzeau”,
- Phyllostachys dulcis,currently unavailable

- Shibatea kumasaca,
- Shibatea lancifolia,
- Indocalamus tessellatus, sometimes called Giant Leaf Bamboo
- Sasa palmata,
- Indosasa gigantea.
